On the definition of averagely trapped surfaces

چکیده

Abstract. Previously suggested definitions of averagely trapped surfaces are not welldefined properties of 2-surfaces, and can include surfaces in flat space-time. A natural definition of averagely trapped surfaces is that the product of the null expansions be positive on average. A surface is averagely trapped in the latter sense if and only if its area A and Hawking mass M satisfy the isoperimetric inequality 16πM > A, with similar inequalities existing for other definitions of quasi-local energy.

Geometry Definition and Contact Analysis of Spherical Involute Straight Bevel Gears

A practical application of the spherical involute surface to the forged straight bevel gears is provided and demonstrated in this work. Conjugate (pure involute) theoretical surfaces are developed from the input design parameters. The surfaces are modified to suit the actual application (automotive differential). The unloaded (or low load) tooth contact analysis of modified surfaces is performe...

Confinement by black holes

The question of whether an observer can escape from a black hole is addressed, using a recent general definition of a black hole in the form of a future outer trapping horizon. An observer on a future outer trapping horizon must enter the neighbouring trapped region. It is possible for the observer to subsequently escape from the trapped region. However, if the horizon separates the space-time ...

STUDY THE WEAR MECHANISM OF A PLASMA ELECTROLYTIC NITROCARBURISED (PEN/C) 316L AUSTENITIC STAINLESS STEEL

The wear mechanism of plasma electrolytic nitrocarburised (PEN/C) 316L stainless steel samples was studied after a pin on disc wear test. The surface morphology of samples after application of PEN/C process was studied using scanning electron microscope technique. The sliding tracks resulting from the wear tests on the treated specimens indicated no signs of plastic deformation and adhesive wea...

Ja n 20 09 The trapped region

I will discuss some recent results on marginally outer trapped surfaces, apparent horizons and the trapped region. A couple of applications of the results developed for marginally outer trapped surfaces to coalescence of black holes and to the characterization of the trapped region are given.

Trapped surfaces, horizons and exact solutions in higher dimensions

A very simple criterion to ascertain if (D − 2)-surfaces are trapped in arbitrary D-dimensional Lorentzian manifolds is given. The result is purely geometric, independent of the particular gravitational theory, of any field equations or of any other conditions. Many physical applications arise, a few shown here: a definition of general horizon, which reduces to the standard one in black holes/r...
